There are no props, no cast of thousands. There is no expensive state of the art multimedia or elaborate sound and lighting. There isn't even a curtain. In fact, there is not much of a set- just a black platform and a black set of stairs to nowhere. Faggot is just one man- writer and actor Lynwoodt Bernard. I just came back from the CD release party for Modern Skirts so look for a review of that show (including Gift Horse) tomorrow. Also tomorrow night I plan on seeing Lynwoodt Bernard perform Faggot tomorrow night in the Balcony Theater in the Fine Arts building at 7pm. But I haven't. Last night the Modern Skirts back from their tour of the U.K.But instead of talking about them, who get plenty of coverage I feel I ought to talk about the two opening acts.
The opening act was Parachute Musical, and from what I heard they were pretty listenable and I would have liked to Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9387235.post-63145081935679680892008-02-20T22:56:00.006-05:002008-02-20T23:48:46.422-05:00UGA's World Priemere of (the English language version of) The Misadventures of Uncle McBuck by Augosto Boal. This brilliant political satire by Augusto Boal uses a myriad of interesting techniques to poke fun at "democracy by capitalism," in the funniest way possible. Before the play started I didn't know anything about it except that it was a political satire with lots of superheros and other copyrighted characters whose names and costumes had been changed, and that it was going to be very, very funny.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9387235.post-80872507532164377782007-06-24T13:39:00.000-04:002007-06-25T23:02:28.765-04:00Athfest 2007 (Part One)If you missed this big festival or haven't heard of it then you either you've been living under a rock or you live nowhere near Athens, GA (and if that's so why are you reading this blog). I do not know how to begin to describe the awsomeness that is this play. It is very symbolic and lyrically very tight. The play is a deconstruction of Hamlet, that took Muller 30 years to write. The play itself is short and subject to much interpretation. I wasn't really impressed with the coffee or drinks, but it is a very popular place. One thing they have going for them that the other coffee shops in town don't have is that they have regular open mike nights and live music and theater. The prices are pretty high compared to some of the other places. It's not that I don't recommend it or I don't go here, just thatAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9387235.post-32310612241859768672006-12-15T17:19:00.000-05:002006-12-18T17:34:04.426-05:00Farm 255This downtown restaurant located next to Clocked, is devoted to organic locally grown foods. It also hosts a number of musical acts during the week and on weekends. It is definitely one of the more upscale restaurants in town, but from what I can tell, it is definitely worth the price. It has a rather limited and somewhat pricey menu (about $20-30), but the food is excellent. I'm not really a big fan of the atmosphere, but its not that much different from most other upscale restaurants. It's an excellent early sci-fi movie about what happens when an alien lands in Washington DC. But unlike other sci-fi movies of the time it's not a shoot 'em up invasion type movie like Independance Day or WarAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9387235.post-11302401402919574962006-12-03T13:16:00.000-05:002006-12-03T13:41:55.577-05:00Saturday December 2ndTown and Gown's Second Stage Production of My Blue AngelThis production was written by local playwright Rex Toddy and was adapted from the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon . It has a rather unusual plot. It concerns a zookeeper -songwriter who's household hurls into chaos on the day that the pope comes to New York. This highly entertaining and engaging dark comical satire on relationships takes place in the top floor apartment in a Brooklyn apartment in the 1960's.One of my favorite Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9387235.post-15875212266247905862006-11-01T12:03:00.000-05:002006-11-01T12:04:53.271-05:00The Flats The Flats is an independent movie starring Chad Lindberg (October Sky), one of my favorite actors. It is a "coming of age" story about a young man who returns home to go to court and finds out he must report to a work farm in 8 days. This film easily could have been some sappy stupid story about how some drunken idiot turns his life around. Instead it was a very good realistic movie about Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9387235.post-1123129557144912192006-10-29T20:42:00.000-05:002006-11-01T12:05:21.149-05:00The Bluebird CafeBluebird Cafe is a small vegetarian restaurant, that serves the best breakfast in the city. I can't vouch for lunch or dinner (which focuses on Indian food), as I've never had it, but I'm told its excellent as well. Although maybe not the best in the city. But breakfast is suburb. They serve mostly omelets, but they do have a few egg less options as well, particularly the tofu scramble. It was conceived, written and directed by that twisted mind of a genius, John Waters, known for movies like Hairspray, and Serial Mom. Like most of his movies, this movie is highly stylized (think 50’s tv show’s Leave it to Beaver and that one with Mayberry and the sherriff). Cry-baby features a multitude of twisted and disturbed Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9387235.post-1122664833422516722006-10-14T22:02:00.000-04:002006-10-18T11:57:12.136-04:00The GritThe Grit is one of my favorite Athens restaurants. Although not what converted me to vegetarianism, (yeah I will admit it is kind of like a religion), it’s the kind of place that routinely satisfies hard core meat lovers. As to what actually made me go veggie I would attribute that to the fact that when cooked right morning star farms chicken nuggets taste better than the real thing, and not Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9387235.post-1159616626465251392006-10-12T22:43:00.000-04:002006-10-15T22:49:00.857-04:00Saving Grace (and Gabriel Kelley)Saving Grace is the name of a very good gourmet restaurant in Comer, GA (yes they have a restruant in Comer!!!). It also the name of a song by a very good and very promising local act currently going by the name of Gabriel Kelley. Members of Gabriel Kelley frequently play acoustic sets at the restaurant. You can’t just have a Barnes n Nobles or Borders and still be a good town. You have to have a store with local charm, namely a used bookstore. In Athens, Jackson Street Books is that store. It's violent, bloody and somewhat senseless. But you have to remember that its about the mob. The set up is that 5 or 6 guys go to rob a diamond wholesaler and somehow botch the job.
